Warm-ups

Have taken up a new habit this past week - before I start working on the day's to-do-list (inking/lettering comics, working on bigger paintings, etc.), I do a short warm-up.

It's all sketchy and unfinished or lacking a background, or just really simple, but it's good exercise either way.

This is what I've made over the last few days:







And I also did this - because this is what I've looked like for most of the day. Except I'm not sitting in a grey void:



Charlie Chaplin and the self-portrait are done in Sai, the other in Painter IX.

Sketchdump

Not much news on this front - I'm plugging away at my Comic Royale-submission, and not much else is happening; Fathoms pt. II went to print on Friday, and I'm expecting my copies some time this week.

The only big (-ish) news is that I've started Tweeting. :)

More Comic Royale-stuff+sketchdump

Been a while since I updated this blog - but that's because I haven't really been doing anything sketchdump-worthy lately. It's been comics and posters and more comics and more comics.

But finally, I've got enough stuff to warrant a post. Let's start with the CR-comic stuff:


The sketch for the second page of my comic - everything is subject to change up to the moment I submit it, but this is pretty much what I've got in mind. Except, you know, properly inked, with grey tones and dialogue and stuff.

Concepts for my Comic Royale submission

First post of 2012, and it's exactly what it says on the label! I'm finishing up Fathoms pt. 2 (only cover and title page to go!), and so I've started working on my submission for Comic Royale #6.

It's a steampunk-action-adventure thing, with a ruined temple and some steampunk-airship-pirate people.

Sketchdump/Fathoms-worldbuilding

Hey, long time no see! I've been busy working on Fathoms and running around in panicked circles as Christmas bore down on me. But I'm better now.

New character, no name yet;


In other news, Painter's Digital Watercolour tool is neat, and I will be using it more.


Trying to work out the overall look of the Moonface tribe.

Ink warm-ups/sketchdump/worldbuilding

Pretty disparate post today - sketches and ink-practise and a bit of Fathom-worldbuilding (because worldbuilding is the most fun you can have with your pants on, honestly).


Costume-ideas (i.e: visual identity) for the Whalerider-people. The one on the far left is Khazri, the one next to him is a tentative design for a standard soldier's uniform; the next is a random woman's outfit, and the one on the far right is probably a cloth-merchant. As a nomadic people, the Whaleriders tend towards becoming itinerant traders.

They also make a big deal out of concealing their faces (both genders); they think of faces as an important expression of identity - the shape of their soul, if you will - and it is therefore considered intensely private.

More ink-warmups. They're a good habit, since they keep me drawing almost every day (and to be honest, the days when I'm not working on Fathoms, I'm drawing other things).






... Perhaps I ought to clean some of these up and colour them. For practise, or something.
